Intersputnik

Intersputnik International Organization of Space Communications established in 1971.
Full members of Intersputnik 26 sovereign states.

In accordance with Article 102 of the Charter of the United Nations, the Agreement of 15 November 1971 on the Establishment of the Intersputnik International System and Organization of Space Communications was registered with the Secretariat of the United Nations on 27 March 1973 under No. 12343. The Members appoint Signatories from among national telecommunications entities.

International Treaties

The key activity of the Intersputnik is operation within the framework of international relations: cooperation with the United Nations and its specialized agencies, intergovernmental satellite communications organizations and other organizations promoting peaceful exploration and uses of outer space (United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO), International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (ITSO), European Telecommunications Satellite Organization (EUTELSAT IGO), International Astronautical Federation (IAF), Regional Commonwealth in the Field of Communications (RCC).

Treaties, Conventions, Agreements
Following the provisions of United Nations General Assembly resolution 1721 (XVI), the Intersputnik participates in the main UN treaties in the field of space activities, interacts with their depositaries, including:
  • the Treaty on Principles Governing Activities of States in Exploration and Use of Outer Space including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, 1967;
  • the Agreement on the Rescue of Astronauts, the Return of Astronauts and the Return of Objects Launched into Outer Space, 1968;
  • the Convention on International Liability for Damage Caused by Space Objects, 1972;
  • the Convention on Registration of Objects Launched into Outer Space, 1975.

Intersputnik Goals


The Organization is tasked to contribute to the strengthening and development of economic, scientific, technical, cultural, and other relations by communications, radio and television broadcasting via satellites, as well as to ensure the cooperation and coordination of efforts in the design, establishment, operation, and development of the Intersputnik international satellite telecommunications system (Intersputnik system).
